Becoming a Legislative Page

Memo from Bob Delaney on being a Page

Very few things are nicer, if you are an MPP, than having a Legislative Page from one's own riding. In the spring session of 2004, Jamie Franks, of St. Albert of Jerusalem school in Lisgar, was the first western Mississauga Page during my time in the Legislature. See our picture below, taken in my office on Jamie's last day at Queen's Park. I have now had three pages from the riding since 2004.

Jaimie Franks and Bob Legislative Pages are the only people, other than the MPPs and the Clerk's staff, who may be the floor of the Ontario Legislature. Pages are Grade 7 or 8 students who live in Ontario, have a high academic standing, are interested in current affairs, and have good interpersonal skills.

Pages prepare MPPs' desks in the Legislature, carry messages and documents between MPPs in the Legislative Chamber and to their offices, work right in the Legislative Chamber while it sits, receive their lessons and tutoring for their term of duty in Queen's Park, and have a once-in-a-lifetime experience within the Ontario government.

Two former Legislative Pages now sit as MPPs: Kitchener Centre MPP John Milloy, and Nickel Belt MPP Shelley Martel. While being a Page, you have to keep up to date with your school work, as well as work in the Government of Ontario. This means that being a Page is a job for the best and the brightest.

Applications and deadlines

To apply, request an application package from the Legislative Assembly. You cannot get an application form directly from my office in Mississauga Streetsville. You must contact Queen's Park directly to apply. The application package will be mailed to the student's home address. The most recently updated version of the application form is the only version accepted for entry to the competition.

Apply early! There are no deadline extensions. Applications are evaluated only twice yearly:

Completed application packages must be received at the Legislative Assembly as follows:

Please note that grade eight students' applications must be received by December 15 of the year they enter grade eight.

If you think you can make it as a Page, look at the Brochure on this web site, and then contact the Legislative Page Program of Ontario at Queen's Park directly.
